Pablo Vergara – Documentary Photographer & Photojournalist
Pablo Vergara is a Chilean-born documentary photographer and photojournalist based in Brazil, specializing in socio-environmental issues, human rights, and rural communities. He holds a degree in Architecture and Urban Planning from the University of Chile and a diploma in Photojournalism and Documentary Projects from the Universidad Autónoma de México, where he graduated in 2023 with the highest distinction under an Appleton Foundation scholarship.
Pablo’s work focuses on documenting the resilience and struggles of marginalized communities, small-scale farmers, and indigenous peoples affected by large infrastructure projects, addressing themes such as land inequality, food security, environmental degradation, and displacement.
Notable projects include “Remnants of the Land”, which examines the impact of Porto do Açu on small farmers and artisanal fishermen in northern Rio de Janeiro, “HeartBreakers”, a multimedia project exploring the emotional and social toll of industrial expansion on local communities, and in 2024, he contributed to the production of the audiovisual documentary “Açu de los Desgostos”.
Pablo has received multiple international recognitions. In 2025, he won first place in the International Photographer category at the Festival Internacional de la Imagen (FINI) in Mexico, underscoring his outstanding contributions to documentary photography. In 2024, he also won 1st place in the International Photography Awards (IPA) – Environment category and the IPA Editorial – Environment award, highlighting his excellence in environmental photojournalism. He was additionally honored with the Alexia Grants Award of Excellence (2025), reflecting his commitment to impactful storytelling. He is a grantee of the VII Academy Foundation Documentary Photography program, mentored by Mónica Allende, and has been highly recommended for the World Press Photo 2025.
Pablo’s work has been exhibited internationally, including an individual exhibition at the Festival Paraty em Foco 2024, the International Exhibition in Athens, and the Festival PhotoVogue 2025 – Square Mile initiative of the VII Foundation, and has been published in major outlets such as El País (Spain) – Planeta Futuro.
Through his photography, Pablo combines meticulous visual storytelling with a deep commitment to social justice and environmental advocacy, producing compelling narratives that give visibility to communities often overlooked in mainstream media.
